Perhaps I should begin by stating that in the last post I forgot to touch on the most important aspect of the objective side's manifestation; namely the central thing all my writing orbits around. Unfortunately I cannot go into detail about this phenomenon, for it is a crucial, nigh all-encompassing theme, and explaining it in length would nullify some of the effects the stories will inevitably have for the reader when they start uncovering it themselves. However, what I can explain is the difference of the Truth of Being (the idea, the concept), and the physical manifestation that bears the same name.
For, indeed, if we take the example of mathematics; the language of the universe, an abstract idea, which only manifests itself into the world via indirect ways - ie. numbers & individuals utilizing them. Let us consider the zero, not as self-evident a concept, one which only relatively late came into widespread use. Roman numerals, as you may know, do not have it, and for quite some time people used clever - or not so clever - workarounds. It wasn't until the concept itself was invented and accepted into everyday use that people realized how much easier things were now, with this new, strange-but relatively straightforward idea. If we think on the zero, the idea of it, it obviously is a separate thing than the symbol one makes when writing it down. This symbol is the physical manifestation into the world via human interaction, and this much became evident in the last post, as, in our "real" world ideas only come to being via conscious actors channeling them. This is not true in the world of Whitend, where ideas & emotions can take form and have curious effects in the objective world, altering the very laws of physics in unexpected ways. Sometimes these effects are clear, observable anomalies such as the dust of melancholy, a perplexing but benign mist that can be found in certain locations... or the travelling holes, even more perplexing, and perhaps not as benign things that nevertheless have their own uses... or further, greater anomalies, huge constructs that can warp locations, affecting whole houses, suburbs, towns... even grander-scale landscapes. Sometimes, on the other hand, this effect is extremely localized, focusing on a singular person. These effects, affecting individuals rather than locales, is what I've come to call the "dreaded subjective side", and this post was supposed to be an examination of it. I will get to it next time, but for now, as a reconciliation I can state that in the aforeseen artist's interpretation you can see someone who's in the very center of this subjective side of the coin - one of the two sisters of melancholy, sisters recently torn apart from each other, leaving this unfortunate individual alone, warping the effects of grief, torment, melancholy and delirium into something out-of-this-world, even out of the world of Whitend, creating something entirely new, something what I came to call Perennial Sophia; the mysterious lady that still walks the woods.

It's been a few years since the start of my foray into the philosophical inquiries concerning the Truth of Being. What began as a somewhat straightforward foray into this topic in the form of bounded and defined (thematical and tone -wise, though not exactly coherent), quickly veered into other, stranger directions, first with a side tour into a short story collection of interviews by Stephen "Steve" Harrison, a retired doctor of some renow. With the aid of this character's interviews with various other afflicted characters, the true depth of the issue began offering glimpses into its scope.
This doctor, as is the case often with people dealing with things grander than life itself, ended up somewhat unhinged, not dissimilar to my own situation. However, that's a side-issue for now, a thing to be expanded later, in the upcoming "Mia's Story". This post, or series of posts, was meant to focus on the concept of manifestation, or to be exact, how various metaphysical phenomena can manifest itself into the physical world. My approach has always been to use fiction in order to make these examples clearer, as the effects in our own world can be harder to pinpoint, often fleeting in nature, obviously not directly affecting the physicality of things, but indirectly; via human beings and their actions, or in behavioral patterns when studying larger scales. When exploring this topic in fiction, no laws of physics are of restrain, and thus, one is free to approach these manifestations on a wider range of angles. Since I employ something what I call radical authenticity when attempting to convey these examples, I can only follow what the intuition tells me, and thus, these manifestations appear in their rawest form (if such a crude term can be allowed); case in point, the appearances of various items throughout the world, the infamous holes, the dust of melancholy, peculiarly behaving animals (typically birds) and so forth... not all the aforementioned examples fall under the category of the manifestation of the Truth of Being, however, for this is only the objective side of the coin. The other side, the dreaded subjective one, will be explored more in the second part, which will be about Aesthetics of Melancholy. |
